  1. It is amazing to think that “ET the Extra-Terrestrial”, this heartwarming film from 1982 about an alien with a love for Reeses Pieces who came to Earth and phoned home, has turned 30. But it is almost as hard to believe that when Drew Barrymore (who starred alongside Henry Thomas as one of the siblings who help ET) made the film, she was young enough to believe that the titular star was real. “She was about 7 years old and the curtain hadnt been lifted yet,” Thomas told Savannah Guthrie on TODAY on Tuesday. “So she was really worried about him the whole time: Why isnt he eating lunch with us? … Yeah, she was super cute.” Thomas himself was only 9 years old when he made the film, but he already knew how to audition like a pro-flatterer of your director, then reduce everyone to tears. “You can find my audition on YouTube,” he explains, adding that hes a big fan of “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (another film directed by Steven Spielberg): “And I came to the meeting (with Spielberg) with my belt and just wanted to talk about Harrison Ford and Indiana Jones. Instead, Thomas is invited to read for the director and he reads the scene simultaneously and makes a little improvement. “Thats the improvisation that got me the role,” he recalls. “I finished the scene and they were in tears and Steven said, Kid, you got the job. I keep waiting for it to happen again.” Thomas adds: “That was the only part of my career that I knew I had before I left the audition room.” What do you remember seeing “ET” for the first time?
