Manche Leute bleiben lieber in Verleugnung.

  1. all make mistakes. Nobody is perfect. Why is it so damn difficult to apologize? Most of us like to be the recipients of a heartfelt apology, but giving is different from receiving, isnt it? As you may have found out, there are many reasons why its so hard to say “Im sorry.” First of all, who likes to admit theyre wrong? Thats no fun! Believe me, I know. Ive had a lot of practice. Sometimes its the fear of rejection that makes an apology so difficult. The prospect of getting the cold shoulder, not being forgiven, or losing a friend can understandably be unsettling, especially if its coming from someone you still love, want to maintain a relationship with, and care about. Sometimes people feel that initiating an apology is a sign of weakness. Apologizing can make some people feel vulnerable or feel like theyre in danger of losing their power and status. Others simply agree with “Im sorry” that they are inadequate or incompetent, making it harder to admit mistakes. Some people say that theyre sorry to be humiliating. Perhaps they were harshly criticized by parents or other important people while growing up, and as a result, admitting mistakes is associated with terrible feelings. Some people prefer to remain in denial. Their logic goes something like this: If you dont admit that you did something wrong, then its almost like you didnt do anything wrong at all. If theres no admission of guilt, theres no need to take responsibility. If only it were that simple! A view that gives an apology in very black and white terms. Giving an apology is like being the “loser” and the person receiving the apology is the “winner.” Its understandably not a fun thought. Sometimes its our pride or ego that gets in the way. And of course, those who lack empathy may have difficulty fully accepting another persons feelings or perspective, making it almost impossible to apologize. Apologies are not supposed to be easy. Theyre supposed to be soulful. Thats why, when done right, theyre so powerful and rehabilitative. Its hard to admit that weve hurt someones feelings or caused someone pain, whether intentional or not. Its also difficult to see ourselves in a less positive light. It requires us to take off the blinders we wear and face our mistakes. With an apology, we want to feel vulnerable. How could we not? But heres the thing
